Hello all, we’re baaack…
As September draws near and summer starts to wind down, our hiatus is coming to an end. Hope your summer has been good and you’re feeling energized for the coming months as we push towards Christmas and winter time! I know, I know, I can hear you grumbling, “but it’s not even Labour Day yet!”
Before moving forward, let’s reflect a bit…
Where there’s smoke there’s fire, and we’ve had plenty of those in our beautiful province this summer. Our thoughts are with those who have been, and continue to be, affected. I’m sure most of us have been fortunate to not have been directly affected, but probably we all know someone who has. I hope there is relief soon for everyone!
I’m going to make this message short and sweet…
First, go to www.sbc-bc.ca and have a look at our new website! Yes, this is a work in progress and we have plenty of work still to do, but we’ve made the jump and are on the new software, which we’ve needed and wanted to do for well over a year. A super special, big, huge, thanks to Paul Andreassen for a lot of time and hard work to get us to this point! Please take a moment to thank him next time you see him.
Second, our Dinner & Speaker events begin again on September 13th, coming up quickly, so please mark it on your calendar now, or better yet, go online and register while checking out the new website!
We will have a presentation on the European Refugee Crisis by Azza Rojbi. Azza is a peace and social justice activist in Vancouver. She immigrated to Canada from Tunisia in 2011 and has since been involved in the immigrant and refugee community in Vancouver. She is a writer and researcher on the issue of immigration and refugees in Canada as well as on the current refugee crisis in Europe. Azza will be providing a balanced and facts-based presentation that will inform and enlighten us on this important issue. Also, we will be presenting our Annual Scholarship Award to this year’s recipient at this event.
Your host for this evening will be Steve Bottomley. Catering will be by the ever-popular Kate Praegel, who, with her team, will be serving us with Danish open-faced sandwiches for the main, with herring and rye bread for starters, and peach cobbler for dessert! Yum! I’m hungry with anticipation already!
FUTURE DINNER & SPEAKER EVENTS:
Please mark your calendars for the following dates:
October 11th: Red Robinson:
Rockin’ radio for six decades. The legendary disc jockey (DJ) was the first in Vancouver to play rock’n’roll music on radio, and the first in Canada to play it on a regular basis. This promises to be a packed event, so don’t forget to register early when registration opens up after the September event.
November 8th: Finland’s 100th Anniversary:
Tentatively being presented by Tom Nyberg, Finland’s Honorary Consul in Vancouver for British Columbia and Yukon Territory
Join us as we celebrate Finland’s first 100 years, and maybe get some insight into what’s up for the next 100 years.
CHRISTMAS PARTY Saturday December 2nd:
Mark the date in your calendars for our annual Christmas Party, featuring a Scandinavian Christmas smorgasbord dinner, entertainment, dancing, door prizes and, of course, socializing with fellow party goers!
