Hello everyone! Welcome to our newsletter at the end of April.
We’ll be a little brief this month, but sometimes less is more.
Top of my list is our Annual Scholarship Award. The deadline for applications is June 30th. If you know of anyone who may be interested, please check the qualification requirements on our website (http://www.sbc-bc.ca/index.php/about-us/scholarships) and get those applications in. For those of you who remember, you will recognize the change in due date for applications, which was previously mid-May. We changed the date of awarding the scholarship from June to September, which allowed us to move the application date. This works much better logistically for the award recipient as often in the past there was very little time from announcing who would receive the award, and when we expected to present it to them at our June dinner. For many reasons, we found that the award recipient was unable to attend on short notice, or June being a bad time for them being available due to other commitments. Therefore, we would end up presenting the award in September anyway, we just made things better for everybody and changed the dates.
I hope you were able to make it out to our April dinner event, I was not able to so cannot tell you much about it. I am told it went very well, and our featured presenter, Susan Cartwright-Coates, was very good and told an interesting tale of the family business, Cartwright Jewelers, and how it has survived for 85 years.
So, what about our upcoming events, you ask!? Well, I have to tell you that for our May dinner event (Wednesday, May 9th), it is a well-guarded secret who will be our featured guest, such a well-guarded secret in fact, that we don’t even know!! The truth is out there and as soon as we are able to crack this mystery we will let you know, stay tuned!
For June, we know that our special guest presenter will be, Glenn Sigurdson, Honorary Consul of Iceland. Glenn is an interesting fellow, check him out on his website, http://www.glennsigurdson.com/.
Don’t forget that the Midsummer Festival is coming up at the Scandinavian Community Centre in Burnaby on the weekend of June 23rd and 24th, you will not want to miss it! We will be there and trust you will be too!
That’s it for now, I have to run (literally), take care and stay safe out there!
UBC Voyage - A Special Presentation
In April, in addition to our regular speaker, we were given a special presentation by Torbjørn Reitan Fyrvik who told us about the UBC Voyage Project. The goal of the project is to design and build a fully autonomous research vessel which will be tested in the Atlantic Ocean. The team is currently working on the project but they are looking for assistance. Click the link below to learn about the project, its status and how you can help make it happen!
