I don’t know about you, but it feels like summer to me! We went from really wet to really sunny! I’m enjoying it, hope you are too!
Our May dinner event featured Wade Pugh. He is a founder and partner of Chewters Chocolates, a specialty chocolate manufacturer located on Annacis Island. They private label premium chocolates, including to the hotel industry which they supply things like “pillow chocolates”, the little treats left on hotel beds. They also have their own brand, ChocXO, a high-quality product you may see in various places, including Costco. Wade took us through the story of getting into the chocolate business with the founding of Chewters in 1984 and its evolution through the decades to present day. Wade’s son, Mitchell, took us through some of the intricacies of chocolate and manufacturing and how they have been expanding and growing in the last few years, with more growth and changes continuing. They have a store front at their manufacturing location where you can pick up some really sweet deals on some of their chocolates, you should stop by and check them out.
If you missed our May event, thank you, as it meant more free chocolate samples for the people who did attend, and yes, they were fabulously delicious!
Coming up on June 13th we will have Glenn Sigurdson as our featured speaker at our monthly dinner event. Glenn is a renowned mediator and lawyer in his day job, and on the side, he is the Honorary Consul General for Iceland. He is also an author, having penned the book “Vikings on a Prairie Ocean” in which he blends personal memoir, family history and Icelandic lore in a unique and wide-ranging autobiography. Vikings on a Prairie Ocean brings to life the people and places of Lake Winnipeg since the arrival of the Icelandic settlers to its shores in 1875 through the engaging lens of a family legacy of fishing on those waters. Beyond authoring this book, in his regular life (http://www.glennsigurdson.com/) Glenn Sigurdson has been known as a mediator, negotiator, lawyer, facilitator, adjudicator, economist, teacher, writer, but now all of these influences have melded and today he states, “I lead without owning” “working in the space between”. Much of his work is within and among companies, communities, civil society organizations, and governments in the public and private sectors, building partnerships and resolving differences. My role is to deliver a special kind of leadership as the “man in the middle”. Today many would describe this as the work of a Social Innovator.
June 13th will also be our annual BBQ event, and back this year, by popular demand, is Vera’s Burger Shack doing the grilling of all-you-can-eat Vera burgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers and two salad options. You will definitely not want to miss this event, our last before we take a summer break until September.
Applications for our Annual Scholarship Award are due by June 30th. If you know of anyone who may be interested, please check the qualification requirements on our website (http://www.sbc-bc.ca/index.php/about-us/scholarships) and get those applications in.
Enjoy the beautiful weather and we’ll see you soon,
