President's Message

Halloween is done and now less than 60 Days to Christmas!
More importantly (for us anyway), just over 4 weeks until our Annual Scandinavian Christmas Party on Saturday December 1st! Early bird rates ($10 off) until November 15th, group rate discount of 10% for six or more!

We’ve confirmed the Silver Stars band will be our live musical entertainment! And, of course, the Runeberg Chorus will perform before dinner, it would not be the same without them! Yes, there will be glögg to warm you up! Catering will be by Kate Praegel and team, always providing the best Scandinavian Christmas Smörgåsbord!

Yes, we’re looking for door prize donations (and, no, this doesn’t include those white elephant gifts you want to get rid of…!), also for silent auction.

Too many reasons to not miss this event so mark the date and signup!

November 14th will be our last regular monthly dinner event of 2018! Our featured presentation will be about International Submarine Engineering, a global leader in remotely controlled submersible vehicles for 40 years and based right here in Port Coquitlam! Hear about them from their Business Development Manager, Phil Reynolds.

Our October dinner event a couple of weeks ago, was excellent, if we must say so ourselves! Rev. Peter Smyth, of the Mission to Seafarers in Vancouver, told us about the seafarers that visit the Port of Vancouver on all those ships we see in the harbour and at Delta Port. We learned how the Mission works to support all these men and women, on-board the ships and on shore. It was interesting to learn of the many nationalities, how they cope, what the issues are and that the work of the Mission, and other support groups, is appreciated and needed.

We were especially proud to award two Annual Scholarships this year, at the October dinner event. Attending in person to receive her award was Emily Moller-Hansen, together with a contingent of family and friends. Gabriella Stokholm-Shaw was unable to attend as she is away studying in Alberta, but will attend an event later in the Spring when she has completed her studies. Her award was accepted by her mother, Solvi Stokholm.

Coming up in the New Year will be some great events as we are busy confirming some excellent speakers. February, of course, will be our AGM and back for a second year will be an Evening of Jokesters to entertain! We will keep the number of jokesters down to a more manageable number this time, but it will be hard for Steve, our jokester wrangler, to choose from all those he has in the wings wanting to participate!

Well, gotta run, hope to see you soon!

UBC Voyage - A Special Presentation

In April, in addition to our regular speaker, we were given a special presentation by Torbjørn Reitan Fyrvik who told us about the UBC Voyage Project. The goal of the project is to design and build a fully autonomous research vessel which will be tested in the Atlantic Ocean. The team is currently working on the project but they are looking for assistance. Click the link below to learn about the project, its status and how you can help make it happen!
