Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone! Hope you had a good 2018 and you’re enjoying the holiday season!
Did you make it out to our Annual Scandinavian Christmas Party that took place on Saturday Dec. 1st? I hear that it went really well (I couldn’t attend as I was out of town)! I’d like to give a big shout out and kudos to the board members who attended and made this event happen and go so well, Solvi Stokholm, Steve Bottomley, Henrik Laursen and especially Paul Andreassen who carried much of the load, and can’t forget Tom Dunn who, while no longer a board member, continues to help out whenever he can (which we all really appreciate)!!
So, those of us who didn’t attend the Christmas Party missed out on a great Scandinavian Christmas Smörgåsbord (put on by the awesome Kate Praegel and team!), great music by the Silver Stars band, who had people dancing the night away, and of course before dinner there was the Runeberg Chorus and glögg to warm you up! There were door prizes too, including a couple of Canucks tickets from Thomas Gradin. We’re always looking for feedback and would really appreciate hearing from those who attended the event, and from those who didn’t we’d like to know why, is there something we could do differently?
What’s coming up in January?
Our dinner event on Wednesday, January 9th! This month we are making it a social dinner with no formal speaker or presentation. We had a challenge to confirm a speaker, so we thought it would be good to try this out and let everyone socialize more and catchup after the holidays, to say hello to the New Year, and goodbye to the old! I’m not sure if the club has done this before, but if successful we will consider making this an annual event. We will have a couple of club topics that we will throw out there for discussion and feedback. There will be time for people who may wish to make some announcements, say a few words, or maybe speak a bit about themselves, their business, any updates they would like to share, etcetera. We will have to impose a time limit to ensure that some long-winded people (you know who you are!) don’t monopolize the microphone!
February will be the Annual General Meeting before dinner, and after dinner will be our 2nd Annual Evening of Jokesters. We will keep the number of jokesters down to maybe three this year as last year we had a whole bunch who were really great, but it was a little unwieldy to manage as we are already time crunched.
Call for Director Nominations:
Part of the AGM proceedings is to elect directors to the board as some directors’ two-year terms are completed. We need some director candidates! If you have any interest at all to serve on the board, or wish to nominate someone, then we need to hear from you as soon as possible as we need to vet potential candidates in advance, and as such there will not be any nominations from the floor at the meeting.
With the New Year comes the time for us to pay our annual membership dues, still only $50 after all these years! If you would like to receive an invoice to pay online, please contact us and let us know. You can also pay at the first dinner event, or at the time of registering online.
Well, gotta run, hope to see you soon!
UBC Voyage - A Special Presentation
In April, in addition to our regular speaker, we were given a special presentation by Torbjørn Reitan Fyrvik who told us about the UBC Voyage Project. The goal of the project is to design and build a fully autonomous research vessel which will be tested in the Atlantic Ocean. The team is currently working on the project but they are looking for assistance. Click the link below to learn about the project, its status and how you can help make it happen!
