The Vikings - Experiences Ancient & Modern

This month we will continue to explore the Worlds of the Vikings.  Syd Heal will address us tonight on The Vikings - Experiences Ancient & Modern.

SYD HEAL was born in 1925 and raised in England, living close to the great Port of Liverpool.  He joined the Royal Navy in 1943 and gained his commission in 1944 reaching the rank of Lieutenant RNVR being honourably discharged following command of a small navy vessel, LCI #11 based in Hong Kong.

Following demobilization he resumed a career in Marine Insurance. He came to Canada in 1952 with his wife and settled in North and West Vancouver and later in Gibsons and Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast.  In 1962 he was the co-founder of a local tugboat company, leaving that business to return to Marine Insurance which he combined with several shipping ventures here on the B.C. coast and in Singapore.  From 1975 to 1990 he was in real estate as a broker and developer.

All along, shipping and maritime history were lifetime interests so with official retirement at 65 in 1990, he started up a small publishing company as a retirement venture. His business carrying the name CORDILLERA BOOKS is the only remaining consistent publisher of marine books in Canada. Others publish an occasional marine book but Syd's activities have seen him publish 20 books of which he is author and about 40 others of a more miscellaneous nature for other authors over the past 18 years. In addition he is a regular contributor and columnist to several marine magazines here in Canada and Britain.  In the past he has been published in American, Irish and Australian magazines and has both national and international status as an author and journalist.

With a lifelong interest in history it is consistent with this that he is to address us tonight on The Vikings - Experiences Ancient & Modern.
